It took me a while to get into it, but I love the show a little bit now. And having just finished the first two seasons of Community, I thought I’d assemble a list of my favourites. I’ve only seen most episodes once, so the list will probably chang greatly upon the inevitable repeated viewings.
[Note: There may be spoilers of minor plot details, but nothing huge.]
10. Asian Population Studies (Season 2, Episode 12)
Funnily enough, the only character who isn’t endlessly selfish is also the one Jeff hates the most. Jeff also hates Chang, just like everyone else does, but at least we know Chang. Even if we also have to know his horrible puns (of which he’s “guilty as chang-d!”).
9. Paradigms of Human Memory (Season 2, Episode 21)
Really, this episode lacks any form of coherent structure. Because it is a clip-show. Though the clips are all new. . . But there are a lot of funny moments (and one of the best end-show tags ever).
8. For a Few Paintballs More (Season 2, Episode 24)
Unlike its predecessor, A Fistful of Paintballs (#3), For a Few Paintballs More is more of a Star Wars-type paintballing adventure. But it’s still pretty damn cool.
7. Early 21st Century Romanticism (Season 2, Episode 15)
“Are you the guys who keep staring at me and intermittently yelling out ‘books?’” Amazing.
6. Politics of Human Sexuality (Season 1, Episode 11)
Out of the many pathetic attempts in Greendale’s history to promote worthy causes, this is perhaps the most hilarious. Also, innocent Annie is confronted with a not-so-innocent duty by the not-so-innocent Dean, and Abed makes a game-saving announcement on the Dean’s behalf. Catch knowledge!
5. Accounting For Lawyers (Season 2, Episode 2)
Abed, Troy and Annie’s information retrieval adventure is one of the funniest scenes of the whole show. And we find out just how pathetic Chang really is (hint, very).
4. Modern Warfare (Season 1, Episode 23)
How does the whole school turned into a paintball tournament? Something about some prize from the Dean so that they could choose their subjects first or something. But who really cares, it’s awesome.
3. A Fistful of Paintballs (Season 2, Episode 23)
Fresh take on Leone’s spaghetti westerns. I figure it narrowly beats out Modern Warfare because it’s just that little bit cooler.
2. Pascal’s Triangle Revisited (Season 1, Episode 25)
The final episode of season one is also one of the funniest and most well-written. Also, being a season finale, there are a few major plot developments and cliff-hangers. And a giant cookie.
1. Intermediate Documentary Filmmaking (Season 2, Episode 16)
What I love about this episode: Abed’s self-referential documentary format, Pierce’s quarter-witted mind games, the Firefly shout out, the surprise appearance of Troy’s hero. And everything else.
